This is an illustration I have created for Talent House's competition for the 30th Anniversary of Jim Henson's fabulous television show Fraggle Rock! Click on the Image above for a more detailed look at it or scroll down to look at a few enlarged details of my favorite sections.
Fraggle Rock was one of my favorite shows when I was little, I used to really love watching the fun adventures of the felty, furry, fluffy and fabulously colourful characters that lived in Fraggle Rock.
Looking back at the television show now I really appreciate the design of all of the different characters, I also love the way the characters interact across the very different realms of Fraggle Rock; Doc's Workshop, The Fraggle's caves, The Doozer's construction sites, Gorg's gardens and of course Uncle Traveling Matt's escapades exploring Outer Space.
I had a great deal of fun working on this piece in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Fraggle Rock. It has to be one of the most detailed illustrations I have ever created. From the beginning I really wanted to convey the idea that Fraggle Rock links these very different characters in my artwork.
Stylistically I gave my artwork a very handmade, hand crafted and textural feel to help portray the characters as the colourful and tactile characters I remember from my childhood. I decided to divide the piece into panels and used colour to tell the story of the different environments within Fraggle Rock, as if they were panels of a handmade celebratory quilt.
